Knowing where you want to be, not how you want it to be

Back in college, about 10 years ago, I used to love R & B and soul music. In fact, my 1st music influences when I was a wee kid were mainly soul, r & b and jazz singers & performers like Aretha Franklin, James Brown, (younger) Michael Jackson, “Earth, Wind & Fire”, Stevie Wonder, BB King, Eric Clapton and many more. When Cobain died, I met Ugly Kid Joe & the realm of “alternative” music. Come to think of it, I don’t even know what “alternative” genre really means.

Now back to when I was in college… Life was good then. Skate, party, skate, party, skate & hardly school. No wonder I’m a dropout! But never a better life when you spent those times falling in love with someone. Love is probably a subject I always like to relate, but hardly talk about. And what do I know about love? Absolutely nothing & everything. I remember clearly back then, I was never a “player”, but always a friend. And friend did I become! And I was observing different perspectives, different views about relationships from the female point of view. Perspective changes, but the essence remains the same. But one lesson I learned from that phase of my life: don’t care too much. It’s a very uncool thing, but it’s worth remembering.

Then, I met Donnell Jones. He filled me with insane thoughts of what “playing” should be. And I heard him. Men are players. But the women are MUCH BETTER PLAYERS than the men. You have to admit that. Women are much more skillful & very adept in relationships than men, yet they deny us the spanking opportunity to live life a bit more, just because we men always do one mistake in the end: we admit our mistakes. If Oxford dictionary spell W-O-M-A-N, I spell W-O-O-O-O-O-O-M-E-N. Note the change from “A” to “E” and also the extra “O”s. Women think in plurals, never forget that. And don’t call me for any therapy sessions.

Let’s watch and enjoy some Donnell Jones shall we…

Donnell Jones – U Know Wut’s Up
Jangan perasaan lebih…

Donnell Jones – Do U Wanna
Boys, play this song to slow down… heat things up…

Donnell Jones – This Luv
User manuals were never provided in the making of a “heart”.

Tony Rich Project – Nobody Knows
But nobody knows. Nobody knows what’s trembling inside…

How blue can I get… when life is a jigsaw puzzle… then came Ultraman…

I am JamLegend

Filed under: Weird Wild Web — Tags: , — Mr. Buyot @ 12:09 PM

JamLegend is really a freaking cool online game service. Their concept is based on the infamous RockBand & Guitar Hero game franchise, JamLegend takes it to the Web. And the Web is the place they should be!

The game is still in private beta, but from my first showdown with my colleagues, JamLegend has a very promising future. Indie bands & unknown musicians has a future at JamLegend. Imagine allowing your fans to jam & play your best single. They will love it!

The showdown is a fucking great feature. Here are screenshots from my first jam.

P/S: Thank you to GigaOM for beta invites. They’re giving out 1000 of them, so start jamming!

Malaysian Malay & Indonesian Malay. 90:10.

Filed under: Colors Of Muhibbah, Weird Wild Web — Tags: , , , — Mr. Buyot @ 3:12 PM

No, the title above does refer to any books or pages or inscriptions. It’s actually Karyawan’s proposed ratio for Malay language songs radio airtime. What do you think?

IT’S RIDICULOUS!

I oppose such proposal. That will kill competition. And killing competition kills innovation. Killing innovation kills progression. How do you expect local Malaysian Malay songs to succeed when:

  1. Music composition, lyrics, beat, rhythm, etc – SUCKS!
  2. Record companies takes a huge bite of the pie. Solve this problem first, then you will solve the basic economic problems faced by all artists.
  3. Educate these artists to use more of their brains! You, as an artist, are already gifted with the gift of talent. Use that talent & your brains to the fullest.
  4. Indonesian artists are more talented, more focused in their music. And they were clever. They realised that they couldn’t grow anymore in Indonesia, so they decided to venture out. So, why can’t we venture out & discover new opportunities? In short: PEMALAS!
  5. They, the Indonesian, simply just produce better songs than us Malaysians. If we say we can be better, than walk the talk.

And I quote,

“Kami berharap agar ia dapat dikuatkuasakan sebagai salah satu akta atau undang-undang dalam bidang penyiaran di negara kita,” katanya pada Mesyuarat Khas Karyawan…

Wow. Sounds like a minister proposing a New Economic Policy for the music business. And this 90/10 ratio sounds very similar to the real N.E.P itself. It’s sounds like you’re afraid of competition, Karyawan.

And I agree with Meet Uncle Hussain’s comment about this new proposed act. It will certainly will make our local artists much more lazy bums as they already are. And this is from my 1st hand experience in the music industry. Not all of them, especially the ones I’ve worked with. They are hardly the pemalas. They just needed some guidance & support.

You, the artist, are suppose to be creative. So, do your business CREATIVELY!

Goddammit. Buat aku tension je.

I mean, come on. We finally have a Malaysian group winning the Gangstarz competition, which maybe was a setup. Don’t get me wrong, One Nation Emcees performed very well in the final competition. Very impressive. But, the other Black Eyed Peas wannabe group from Indonesia, was very impressive too. If I compare vocally, D’Reborn sounds a lot more better. But there’s a lesson to be learn here. If you worked hard enough, you will get your moment to shine. I know i know, sometimes you feel like the moment will never come with all these new competition building up around you.

But hey, that’s life. You need to be survivor, not a follower.
