Taking back #BarCampKL. It’s no revolution. It’s change.

It’s time of that year again and BarCamp KL has returned. Happening on the 24th – 25th of April 2010, BarCamp Malaysia KL edition brings together different, interesting people from a variety of background. And everyone is around for the love of knowledge sharing. If you’d like to see TRUE knowledge sharing in action, BarCamp KL 2010 is the place to be. It’s about being open and from what I’ve seen, it’s about being yourself.

Now, the idea of taking back BarCamp KL is more like a call to take action. Every time, and I include myself in this situational example, I see developers struggle. But as change happens, these recharged developers (and I must include the *preneurs type of people. the good ones) decide to take action on their own to stir things up. Change the way they work, change the way they communicate, change the way they live their life. Best part: helping other people change as best as they can. And I see that happen with every Barcamps I’ve been in the past so far in Southeast Asia. It’s amazing. These people actually changed for the better of themselves. While some may come with a pre-thought agenda, but my examples are more towards the people who just love what they do. Even if it’s for nothing for no reason.

Barcamps have that effect on people. Especially the people who are really into it. And most importantly, the people who leaves every Barcamp with that note of inspiration in mind. The amount of knowledge & thoughts being shared & torrented to each other in a Barcamp is amazing. And if you look at the actual trend of Barcamps, it has always been about creativity, technology & lifestyle all mashed up together. But lately in Malaysia, it kind of died after the 1st one. From my observations, it kind of got a little bit strayed from the path where it should be.

Where is the right path? I have no idea. But I know where it was before. It just doesn’t have the right fire anymore. Maybe it’s because the real Al Kapitan is taking a break. Maybe it’s because the increasing amount of “how to become rich” & “how to become good at marketing” kind of talks is getting on my nerves. I’m guilty with my 1st Barcamp talk on music which technically was a marketing type of talk. But I was mashing up technology, business, musicĀ  & lifestyle concepts all together in one talk for one purpose with a different perspective. Maybe it’s because the quality of the talks was getting a bit sloppy. Maybe it was low on geek juice.

Maybe no one was inspired.

God knows where it was going to go. But I do know that I can help stir things up. I know I can do at my own capacity to help change the situational example that is happening right now. I know I can share something with everyone. Small things, big things. Anything.

I hope with what I’ve done, it will inspire others to do the same. With the knowledge I have shared, it will help and bring change. Size doesn’t matter.

This is what taking back BarCamp KL is about. This is how I feel about it. Taking it back is how I do for it to change. Hopefully.

What will you do?

Hacking the board

It’s an awesome experience hanging out & sharing stories with them, eating spicy crabs & drinking brews at Jalan Alor.

A later post about what happened at BarCamp KL.

#barcampkl was like…

Going back to high school. I come from a coed school, so walking along the hallway today at BarCamp was like going wayyy back when there was no facial hair growing rapidly on my face. You’ll see these people, walking & talking about something, moving from class to class, shouting in the hallways, making sudden appearances & disappearances into the classrooms, making fun of people, jokes flying around, gossips, pushing & stacking the class tables to the corners of the room so that everyone can start dancing in the middle of the class… man… those were the days…

BarCamp KL. Can you hear the music?

Well well, it’s that year again. BarCamp KL has come again. After an exciting & hyped up first year, the BarCamps are starting to mushroom in Malaysia. And hopefully, it’s all for the good of knowledge.

Most people would still ask, what is BarCamp? You can have the technical answer for that. The answer varies, but the reasons why the spirit of BarCamp (and FOSS.my) lives on will always be the same. It’s like an underground community coming together and actually share stuff, whether it be for professional or personal benefit and it’s for all. That’s more important. The idealistic & holistic understanding of what we are doing together is for all & for everyone. It’s important for everyone. It’s interesting for everyone. And would it be great if everyone to know about it? Of course!

And that’s what BarCamp is all about. It can be about anything: art, drama, theatre, tech, business, finance and oh so many knowledge & interesting stuff that is out there and living inside us that is just waiting to burst out. If you have that feeling, come to BarCamp. You will feel just right at home.

And I’ve been thinking. These two tweets made me think about how I can put things into, well, maybe, perspective. I have no idea yet what to talk about, and time is running out. Ok, enough. The first thing came up to my head is a title. And here it is:

The Grassroots: Music, Infinity and Beyond!

What it’s all about? While typing this post down, I might have an idea. It’s an update from my last presentation at BarCamp about music. I will also probably talk about 2 communities that I personally and together with several close friends built. The spirit. The reasons to believe. The problems. One will be about a music community & the other, we’ll see. Also, I will probably put in some ideas about the future of digital music & other stuff. It’s probably more on like how to get your own groupies, like in a good way. Ya know? Hmm…

Whatever it is, OpenSocial hackathon is still on. And I’ll see you at BarCamp KL!

BarCamp Malaysia 2008 photo essay using other people’s photos

This post is way overdue. I’ve been saving this post on my drafts section for months & months. Only today when I rummage through my drafts, I found this unposted. But since we’re building some hype for the next BarCamp KL 2009, let’s take a view of what happened last year. I was unable to attend BarCamp JB 2008, so I won’t know how to relate or show the experience gathered from there. Enjoys!

The schedule wall.

I missed this session. I was late!

Here’s my session at BarCamp Malaysia. Thanks to all who has made their attendance.

I was nervous like hell. Sweating. Late. Scared. I just wished for some good luck. The last presentation I made in person was for the Minister of Entrepreneur & Cooperative Development & his cabinet team. And that was like 3 years ago!

People listening. I’m surprised!

“Ok, tengok ni. Nampak semut – semut bekeliaran?”

More people listening. Tengok ape tu bang?

I was ready to cast a “jampi” to Khai Lee. Ooooooommmmm….

And people was still listening…

ar.zu.my teaching us some Criss Angel magic tricks! Put your left hand here & put your right hand there… and you shake it all about!!!

Sedap tak bang? Sedaaaaaapp giler!!!

Cheryl Goh was the winner for the Nokia phone. Kamal: “jual kat i bleh?” Cheryl: “let me be a werewolf first!”

This is bad. Even when I was in DevFest, with almost half of the attendees were Malaysians, I observed that we Malaysians never understood the importance of a garbage bin.

We were waiting for Talat to start hist mathematical magic show.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Free of everything. Huh?

Thank you to Azman Saini for sharing these photos on Flickr. Can’t wait for the next BarCamp!

Oh wait, it’s going to be in Penang & JB! Don’t forget Batam!

Monday morning manity

What a better way to start your Monday morning with a little bit of vanity check? Fired up Google Blog search & typed out my online moniker and I found one interesting blog post that I’d like to share. And it’s about BarCamp Malaysia, of course.

Yup. You don’t need a record label to start off your music career & most of y’all know it! The slides from my session at BarCamp Malaysia is available online. Hope that you find it useful.

Music to my ears

BarCamp was definitely a success today. Although I, *cough*, hardly was in any of the sessions (except for mine), it was really good to see a place full of testosterone, sprinkled with a lil bit of pheromones on top, exchanging ideas & most importantly, socialising with each other. And it’s all geeks! Basically…

I’d like to thank the audience, who came for my session & manage to survive listening to me talking & talking & talking about how we can bend the rules of the game in the music industry. It was really super fun & relief being able to share some of my personal experiences in music & the conclusions that I make from my observations. Music is my passion, although I’m unable to play any kind of instrument. But I can sing ;)

I hope that I got my point through. We, can really make a difference.
