Malaysian Myth of Hari Raya Aidilfitri (update)
I received an interesting comment regarding my post debunking the myth of how we Malaysians celebrate Aidilfitri. It was a chit chat between a friend & former business partner back in the days. He simply said,
“Naz, you made people feel ashamed”
And yes my friend, that is the whole point.
I have no reason to put down or bring shame upon my own kind, but I have a responsibility towards my faith & my fellow Malaysian Muslims to bring forward the truth about our own manipulative & strayed perception.
The main problem about some (maybe majority) of us Malaysian Muslims is that we have this holier than thou attitude. Try to think for a moment & ask yourselves, are you really holier than me? No pun intended to my fellow friend, as in the end, he sees my point of view, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he agrees with me. And I’m cool with that. You can’t force people to agree with you can you?
I admit that I have my own set of weaknesses that does put shame to myself. I myself have done things that shouldn’t be done in my years as a human being. I know where I stand & I have taken the time to understand why my faith proactively reminds me the things I shouldn’t do. I took time to learn about my faith. And here’s my question, did you take time & learn about your faith or you just left it all behind when you left high school & started to have a girlfriend?
I see this hypocrism practiced by our own people as a weakness that can be manipulated greatly by not only ourselves, but also other people who are not us. You shout battle cries whenever someone speaks against your faith, but ask yourself this question; are you really that alim to even understand the extreme degree of responsibility in protecting your faith? Are you really doing the right thing?
I ask myself that question everyday & I thank God that he has given me the amount of intellect to deduce what is right & what is wrong in my everyday actions. Kena selalu beringat, as my mother has always reminded me.
Some of you speak of freedom should be granted & given to everyone equally. But what is freedom without responsibility? Are you responsible enough to protect other people eventhough you can’t even protect yourself?
Tell me and I will listen. Maybe you are holier than me.
