Desperados wearing a songkok

By far, this is the saddest thing I’ve ever read. It could be a media play, highlighting bad “behaviour” of Malaysians, showing how desperate they really were. It is a sign of the great depression, as “don’t give a fuck” attitude is seeping into veins of people who needs to make ends meet.

To those who are fortunate, as usual, judgement comes from their own point of view. Try to live the desperate life that squeezes every inch of you, maybe then you will learn to understand how it actually feels to be desperate. But then again, people fear what they don’t understand, preach what they think they understand.

Desperation. You need to be desperate to understand desperate.

Patching Debby with a Suhosin plaster

When I searched on Google for “suhosin debian etch”, I was looking for good tutorials & references to help me have a clear mind on what I was about to do. Patching is easy, but patching without knowing the (latest) side effects can drastically cripple whatever web applications already installed in those servers I have. Risky. I found this tutorial on HowToForge and thought that I can try test the tutorial on my Debby desktop first.

Ultimate fail! Eeek!

The Suhosin patch I downloaded didn’t work with Debian’s latest php5 source. I double checked again, and I found that the tutorial provided by HowToForge was outdated. They were referring to a php5 Debian build etch1, and the current build I have is etch11. Sigh.

So, if you’ve installed php5.2.0-8+etch11 (you can check the version by running phpinfo()) and you want to secure your PHP installation, here’s my super speed 3 step-to-a-hardon:

  1. Get the Suhosin package: sudo apt-get install php5-suhosin. Install any dependacies required.
  2. Restart your Apache webserver
  3. Run phpinfo() again & voila! Fully hard on… errr… hardened PHP5.

Why did the earlier HowToForge tutorial doesn’t work? Apparently, Debian has heavily patched their php5 packages for ultimate security if you plan to live without Suhosin. I love Debby!

Now it’s time for Gentoo patching. A busy raya ahead, got to finish this quick!

Make your reckoning remix with Radiohead

Radiohead is at it again! After a huge success with their previous fans remix experimentation for the song “Nude”, they put up another song just aching to be remixed by their fans. 2,252 “Nude” remix was produced the last time and they are expecting this new experiment to either top the last remix or otherwise. There’s a catch though. For the “Nude” remix, Radiohead were giving away the song stems (elements) for free. But that’s not the case for “Reckoner” this time. You gotta pay USD$0.99 (that’s about ~RM3.60) to download “Reckon” song elements from iTunes music store. Backing vocals, bass, drums, guitars, lead vocal & piano/strings tracks are there for you to split up & remix a new tune using your favourite mixing software.

The best part of it is that Radiohead encourages you to upload your remix to their remix site & let the community of Radioheadbangers decide if your remix makes the cut or not. And for just 99 cents, I think it will be money well spent to be able to participate directly in Radiohead’s marketing. I’m not sure what you’ll get for having the best of the best remixes, but Radiohead sure does know how to interact actively (that’s where you get the word, interactively) with their fans using their music. Music & technology is an awesome combo if you know how to mix & stir it well together. Don’t forget to support Radiohead by buying their stuff.

Mix it & let it be yours.

Revolusi 1948

Revolusi ’48“, a brand spanking new documentary by the talented indie director Fahmi Reza, the filmmaker for “10 Tahun Sebelum Merdeka” documentary. This documentary tells us the story of the revolutionary Malaya military regime that fought against colonization of the British empire in 1948.

As a former full blooded public high school Malaysian student, the history books that we learned during our school days basically tells us stories of subjugated interstellar war among ourselves, whether the fight was for freedom or anti colonialism or *put your own reasons here*. But before I continue, I’d like to disclose that I skipped history classes in 2 different high schools that I went since form 1.

Guess what I got for History paper during SPM? FAIL. But it didn’t matter.

I only have 1 reason why I skipped those classes: The teachers, both of them in the 2 schools I went, were boring. They didn’t make me interested in history at all. The only history I’m interested in was the one I was making. Hah!

I did read about Temenggung Jugah, Tok Janggut & the lot of them in high school history books. But reading about them never actually stirred anything in me. They never or hardly described the real kind of fighting that took place. The psychological warfare, the bloody battles, the deaths, none of that was properly described in our textbooks, but yet they expect us to be patriotic about it. How do you expect us to understand if you keep on hiding the truth? They made us think that it’s over.

It is true, to a certain extend, that the truth is way much harder to grip with. But why hide it using colorful & sensible stories, telling us it’s all good now? Why can’t you write it in a way that it can stir curiosity? If you can’t put it in the official text, then leave some clues for us! Let the curious find our way to uncover the truth. The history high school books tells us that the fight is over. But no, the fight is never over when there’s REAL threats that wants our beautiful country Malaysia to go down. They never seem to tell us it is up to us to maintain this fight & to keep on fighting against those people that says they know what democracy really is, but barely able keep their own countrymen alive. And I’m not only referring to Malaysia, but also to those who govern the all watching eye who never seem to learn to NEVER PICK A FIGHT WITH MALAYSIANS.

We’ve been colonized before and we know how to fight back. Don’t make us do it again.

Selamat Hari Raya dari Mr.Buyot & family

Aidilfitri is upon us & it is that time of the year. On behalf of myself & my family, I’d like to reach out & ask forgiveness for any kind of criticisms, words, actions that may have hurt you & you & you & you in so many ways. I wish I can turn back time, but as they say,

Sesal dahulu pendapatan, sesal kemudian, tiada gunanya

And I can’t change whatever that has been done & said in the past. I’m a hypercritical critic & I know my words are poisonous, but these “skills” did come with a price to pay.

I’m sorry for anything that might have hurt & I hope to forgive for those who have, erm… well, hurt me. Before that, enjoy Petronas’s new Aidilfitri commercial for 2008. Tears rolled down my cheek when I watched this. I’d do anything for my family, especially my mom.

Mummy’s boy, nak buat camna kan?

Have a look at behind the scenes. Pretty neat stuff.

Take care & drive safe. Selamat Hari Raya, ku pohon maaf zahir dan batin.

Google’s Sergey Brin & Larry Page on rollerblades!

This definitely did not go unnoticed by me. The founders of Google, during their anticipated T-Mobile G1 phone launch, had to skate (“skate” is the correct word to use in a sentence when describing this action. Not “rollerblade“) to the venue because they were hold up in traffic or whatever they were working on.

Watch the video that shows a lil bit of rolling here & there by the Google founders.

Awesome. This will bring rollerblading to a different geek level. Hell, most of the best rollerbladers in the world are geeks like Jon Julio (super geek), Randy “Roadhouse” Spizer (super geek) and also Shane “The Mind” Coburn (his rollerblading revelations are by far, geeky). Other than our everyday job, working on geeky stuff, we do this on our rollerblades:

But, don’t roll because it’s cool. You definitely cannot withstand & endure the pain. Roll because you want to.

I love rolling.
