When you talk about legends, you tend to talk about their aura, their personas. The unseen matters that made them a legend to you.
Butterfingers is a legend. And grunge is not dead. Never was. Their post-Nirvana sound was very familiar & similar to Silverchair or Bush and they did it again. The new album, entitled “Kembali”, sounds somewhat similar to Silverchair’s “Young Modern” album sound. Or maybe this is just a progression of the Butterfingers sound.
Back in December 2006, I bumped into them, One Buck Short. Since I was Edris’s ever loyal assistant, I got to be close to them, in a different perspective. I was working on my nuGrooveTV project, so I took the chance to document their lives front & back stage.
In 2007, I took up the opportunity to be One Buck Short’s tour manager. I toured with them all around Malaysia and to Macau & China as well. I made it to Hong Kong with Rahul while the rest of the band flew back to KL after the China shows.
From left: Izal, Imran, Mooky, Senthil Raja, yours truly & Rahul. We’re already at Zhuhai, the border district between China & Macau. Eventhough they are actually the same country, but it was a case of Macau being a special administrative region some sort when China took over.
From what I’ve seen & experienced, managing a band is a full time job. You need to live & breathe with the band.
I was unable to give the full commitment the band needed from me, my focus was elsewhere all the time. I purposely hold myself back, waiting, taking one step at the time, at the same time dealing my personal current affairs, until the moment their album was confirmed at the printers. And this time it’s for real. I told myself it’s time to go & be with my love ones. The band doesn’t need me anymore to hustle/hassle/loyar on their album. They know how to take care of themselves. They just needed some help.
Mooky, Rahul, Izal & Imran are truly great people in person. In a short 1 year period, I think I know these boys well… in, side & out.
They will be hosting a launch party of their “Halal & Loving It” album & also the premier of their Jack ‘n’ Jill commercial. Event starts from 3pm - 6pm and it’s on this Friday, 2nd May 2008. Location: LaundryBar, The Curve. Come everyone! Bring everyone!
This time, they are going mainstream. Always remember your roots & it has been an honor & pleasure to have been working with y’all.
Good luck & thank you.
PS: When I met the band for the first time, I was filming their Rock The World 7 performance. I shot, edited & produced their live video. And other videos too.
Ah… I finally tracked down my very first personal website. My very first experiment into the world of valid HTML & CSS. Those were the days when Zeldman was (and still is) the king. The days when being close to D’ Bow Man was the must thing to do (and he still is the coolest person on the web I’ve ever known & never met. Hah!). He kinda had that Doogie Howser personality in him. And designing pixel by pixel icons wasn’t the hardest thing to do. And then came the birth, in my opinion of history which I might be wrong, the unborn child of social networking.
Yes boys & girls, I’ve been around that long. I have already got it when DOM was the coolest thing to learn. Well, to some extend that is.
The guys I mentioned, they are the source of inspiration, for me to have stayed this long in the Web business. Largely because of their evangelist attitude towards delivering the message across about the current state of the Web. They had it locked down when it comes to personalized web publication (that’s blogging to some of you). More technical history in another time.
But more or less, they’ve inspired me to believe in what I can do to change the perception, the attitude, the implications, the focus, the inner workings and the finer lines of the World Wide Web.
Thanks guys. I couldn’t have done it without you guys starting all of it.
Note to self: THE first website I’ve ever made was the KJROLLERS. AltaVista was da bomb.
When Darth Vader starts to display public affection to his real life fans, he might consider being taken to the AA for a month or a year. I am sure about one thing though, Luke & Leia, came out as twins because big, bad daddy used to love eating bananas & hangs out with the prettiest silverbacks in town.
Now, a Google board game. Next, we will start having summer olympics between startups: 1Terabyte Race from Kathmandu to Kilimanjaro. You can download the Googolopoly PDF file and start printing these babies out.
I just wish they had make the Monopoly dude to look like Sergey Brin, Steve Jobs or maybe Bill Gates. More relevant character.
Update: I think i’ve done enough for the new Mr. Buyot look. Next? It’s time to clean up the Textile junk.
Ahh… what’s better than to have a fresh install of the new Wordpress 2.5. Install was quick & clean. New admin UI is very, muted. So, what else can I do with it?
